I made a "thing" over this holiday break - a small utility called jbang
that you can use to run single file java files with built-in dependency fetching.
For example you can take the following file and save in classpath_example.java
.
You can run it as jbang classpath_example.java
or make it executable chmod +x classpath_example.java
.
When you run this the first time with no existing dependencies installed you should get an output like this:
$ ./classpath_example.java
[jbang] Resolving dependencies...
[jbang] Resolving log4j:log4j:1.2.17...Done
[jbang] Dependencies resolved
0 [main] INFO classpath_example - Welcome to jbang
1 [main] INFO classpath_example - Hello from Java!

To install and try it you can use sdk install jbang

Typesafe Scripting in your favorite Java IDE
Having Java available to do scripts isn’t on its own super interesting - you’ll want to have it usable in your favorite IDE to get compile errors, typechecks, content assist etc.
Fortunately that is easy, just run something like:
code `jbang --edit classpath_example.java`
This will open up your IDE (in this case Visual Studio Code).
It will behind the scenes generate a temporary Gradle based project with a symbolic link to your file and print out the location. When the IDE have Java/Gradle support it will be able to automatically setup the classpath and you now have all the Java features you are used to.
If you add new //DEPS
to the file just rerun jbang --edit classpath_example.java
and the project will be updated.
Its refreshing not having to bother with all that scaffolding and extra files in my repository. Its as minimal as a Python script.
Simplicity of scripting
Since I made jbang
, my normal urge to fall-back to use Python for scripting various tasks/text processing have greatly reduced. Having the full power of java and its vast ecosystem is powerful.
Especially realizing that since Java 8 with streams/lambdas and additional improvements in Java 10 and 11 in the Java libraries your code end up being very compact.
Like yesterday I was working on enabling automatic label of pull-request on Quarkus using GitHub action labeler and I needed a way to validate how the labels was applied.
Normally I would have started using python, but with jbang
I had in matter of a few minutes a first working Java based script to do this. Not only did it do the one task I wanted but I also by using picocli got command line help, validation and ANSI color output.
And since jbang
support file/http/https URL’s as input you can run it like this:
jbang https://git.io/JvJox
Missing required parameters: <yamlFile>, <rootDir>
Usage: <main class> [--only-dirs] [--only-matches] <yamlFile> <rootDir>
Prints matching labels for directories found in folder. Useful to check how
labeler will work.
<yamlFile> Path to .github/labeler.yml
<rootDir> Path to dump labels for
--only-dirs If set, only print for directories
--only-matches Print only matches
Really powerful and a great improvement over my past Python and even Go based small utility scripts.
Just imagine combining this with text processing, analytics, UI’s, etc. you can do a lot very easily.
This realization gave me an idea for something more.
Using Java for scripting your GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions are really nice and I’ve enjoyed migrating my personal projects from Travis based publishing to GitHub Actions - so much I’ve even tried write some custom github actions; but GitHub’s "love" for everything node/javascript by default made me be back in a slow world.
Thus, I created jbang-action
that lets you write single file java scripts to use in your GitHub action workflows.
Imagine you have a createissue.java
that you use to create an issue based on some workflow in your GitHub actions - a minimal (dumb) version of that would be:

With that I can now have Java based "scripts" as part of my GitHub action workflows with full type checks and nice IDE support without all the tedious scaffolding until you actually need it.
